About Air New Zealand

Based in Auckland, Air New Zealand comprises the national carrier of New Zealand. The company was founded in 1940 and was originally named Tasman Empire Airways Limited before it became fully owned by the New Zealand government in 1965. It was consequently renamed Air New Zealand. The airline features a 106-strong fleet of aircraft flying to 22 domestic destinations and 28 international destinations across Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America with Air New Zealand flights to London featuring amongst the most popular. Finally. Air New Zealand has been a member of the Star Alliance since 1999 and features codeshare agreements with other top airlines such as Cathay Pacific, Air Canada, Jet Airways and Lufthansa.

Online check-in

Air New Zealand online check-in is open 24 hours prior to scheduled flight departure during which time passengers can select their seat, manage their checked baggage and print out their boarding pass. Passengers can check-in online from a computer on the Air New Zealand website or mobile site, as well as check-in online using the Air New Zealand mobile app whereby an electronic boarding pass will be sent to their mobile. This online service is only available for domestic flights. Passengers on international Air New Zealand flights will need to check in at an airport kiosk or counter to receive their boarding pass.

Hand luggage allowance

Air New Zealand cabin baggage allowance varies in accordance with the passenger class of travel. Economy Class travellers are allowed one item of hand luggage weighing a maximum 7kg. Business Class, Premium Economy and Air New Zealand Elite, etc. are allowed two pieces of cabin baggage weighing a combined total of 14kg. All items of hand luggage must not exceed the maximum dimensions of 118cm (height, length and width).

A small personal item, including a slim line laptop, hand bag or duty free item, may also be carried on-board the flight. Finally, passengers should be aware that laptops in larger bags are considered one item of cabin baggage. Excess baggage fees apply to any items of luggage that exceed the aforementioned dimensions and weight restrictions. The baggage policies of the Air New Zealand codeshare partners may differ so passengers are advised to check before embarking on their journey.

Checked baggage allowance

On Air New Zealand flights, checked baggage allowance varies in accordance with the passengers' departure/final destination. However, in general all items of checked baggage must not exceed 23kg or measure more than 158cm (height, length and width), otherwise an excess baggage charge will apply. For international travel, Economy Class passengers are entitled to one item of checked baggage with the aforementioned restrictions, whilst Premium Economy members are allowed up to 2 bags and Business Class passengers up to 3 checked bags.

For domestic flight destinations, the allowances differ in accordance with the fare type:

Seat: No free baggage allowance.
Seat and bag: 1 item of baggage.
Flexi Time/Smart Saver: 1 item of baggage.
Flexi Plus: Up to two items of baggage.

The weight and dimensions restrictions for domestic Air New Zealand flights are 23kg and 158cm (height, length and width). Any items of luggage weighing over 32kg will not be accepted by the airline.

The outward flight was operated by Air Tahiti Nui. The flight was exceedingly good, the crew were great. One of the best flight I've done. However, the return flight was operated by Air New Zealand. Crew were ok and professional, but any food or drinks HAD to be purchased. For the price we had to pay, this was an absolute rip-off on a 5 1/2 hour flight! Not impressed at all!

Airline travel in NZ is always expensive but it's worth paying a little extra to use the National carrier - whose flights always seem to leave on time. Sadly that can't be said for some of the cheaper airlines.
