New York

And the winner of best city for cheap flights is...

Where to go if your bank balance is low but the urge to travel is high? What destinations are gaining popularity at pace? We've crunched the numbers for bookings made on Opodo.co.uk in 2012, and have all the answers here.

The cheapest short-haul destination to fly to in 2012 was Malmo in Sweden – a hip, arty city nicely complemented by the low price to get there. Among our cheapest mid-haul destinations, was Kuwait City, Kuwait's pristine capital. And, for those who wanted to spread their wings even further, cheapest for long-haul flights was New York.

The list of fastest growing destinations compared to the same period in 2011 is quite different to the 2011-2010 comparison, when Ukraine cities topped the chart thanks to Euro 2012. This time, destinations are eclectic and unusual indeed - we admit to getting our atlas out for a couple - topped by Bratislava in Slovakia.

Overall, the top destination booked on Opodo was London (same as 2011) due to both plenty of domestic flights and visits from Europe.
