And the winner of best city for cheap flights is...

Where to go if your bank balance is low but the urge to travel is high? What destinations are gaining popularity at pace? Thanks to new figures for bookings made on Opodo.co.uk in 2011, we've got all the answers here.

The cheapest short-haul destination for the period was Dortmund in western Germany – a city of woodlands and waterways nicely complemented by the low price to get there. Among mid-haul destinations, best bet for cheap flights was Jordan's cosmopolitan capital, Amman, one of the gateways to the Dead Sea. And, for those who wanted to spread their wings even further, cheapest for long-haul flights was New York.

The list of fastest growing destinations compared to the same period in 2010 shines a gleaming light on the British national obsession. With the Euro 2012 football championships being hosted by Ukraine, 4 in the top 10 were Ukraine cities, with Dnipropetrovsk leading the charge – a big change for a destination that foreigners couldn't visit without official approval until the 1990s.

Overall, the top destination booked on Opodo was London – easily – due to both plenty of domestic flights and visits from Europe.
