Phuket

To the uninitiated Phuket will probably stand for only two things: beaches and nightlife. Both it certainly has in abundance, but that's only a piece of the picture. This popular island, connected by causeway to the southwestern coast of Thailand, offers a surprising array of activities and experiences, from festivals and culture to wildlife, watersports and inland adventures.

The best time to visit is between November and April, before the monsoons arrive - although you can find bargains outside of this period and still be lucky with the weather.

From October onwards, the island hosts a slew of celebrations, ranging from ancient tributes such as Loi Krathong (to honour the mother of water) to rather more modern events, such as the Phuket Gay Festival. Chinese New Year in January/February, and Songkran (Thai New Year) in April are also big events on the local calendar.

Renowned for its coastal exploits such as diving, snorkelling and windsurfing, Phuket's interior holds plenty worth discovering as well. Take your pick from jungle trekking, river rafting, mangrove forests, leatherback turtles or simply drinking in the utterly breathtaking scenery in the national parks. The island also has the largest seashell museum in the world, a butterfly park, two aquariums, and Buddhist temples.

Phuket Town and Patong are the main urban centres, bustling by day, but party central at night with clubs, bars, food stalls and restaurants revealed in all their glory under the psychedelic flicker of neon lights.

As for beaches, the western coast is one gorgeous stretch of sand after another. Alternatively, you could venture to one of the many breathtaking islands off the east coast - such as Phi Phi Le, as enjoyed by Leo di Caprio in The Beach.
