As you punt placidly along the River Avon on the fringe of the Canterbury Plains, admiring the cathedral and other neo-Gothic buildings near the banks, you might easily imagine you were in England's green and pleasant land. Well, except for the backdrop of alpine crags sweeping into the sky, the balmy weather, and the fact that sun-kissed vineyards, beaches and ski fields are all just a hop, skip and a jump away.

Christchurch, situated along the South Island coast about 300km from its northern tip, is a convenient breathing point before, between or after the often energetic attractions of the region. Once a rather sleepy and conservative stop, in recent years it has sprouted bars, restaurants, continental cafés, cutting-edge clubs and a vibrant arts scene.

Add to that its proximity to sandy shores, wine country and seasonal skiing, and you'll understand why lingering longer might seem tempting. It's also a good place to sign up for such daredevil pursuits as rafting, skydiving, shark-diving and paragliding, although whether that's a pro or a con is another question.

The South Island has incredibly raw, diverse terrain and - assuming you emerge from your extreme exploits unscathed - is a phenomenon to explore, from coast to coast. Mighty mountains, glaciers, fjords, forests, rugged shores and abundant wildlife have resulted in a shower of UNESCO World Heritage stamps of approval, as well as fabulous walking, climbing and view-gazing.

Just a few words of warning: it's quite common for visitors to decide they never want to go home again.
