Despite the damage wreaked on Maputo during the civil war, the once beautiful capital is slowly rebuilding itself. Traces of its former elegance can be seen across the city, and it remains an unusual not to mention lively destination, particularly around the Costa do Sol beachfront.
One of the city's main photo stops is the rather regal train station, designed by Gustave Eiffel (of Parisian tower fame). It's also worth visiting the National Art Museum, which showcases the work of local artists.
Sampling Mozambique's food will give you a good insight into its unique blend of influences. Portuguese, African and Asian flavours are all represented in piri-piri, Zambesi chicken, Delagoa Bay prawns or rice with matapa (cassava leaves and ground peanut) sauce. Energy restored after a good meal, it is time to take a safari, dip down to the dive sites and explore the beautiful beaches widely considered to be among the best in the world.
Of these glorious beaches, the three islands comprising the Bazaruto Archipelago near the town of Vilankulo take top prize. Just don't spend the whole time loafing on the sand or you'll miss out on the sacred buildings of Mozambique Island, the northern half of which has been declared a World Heritage Site.
