Increasingly popular as a tourist destination and only a short trip across the water from mainland UK, Belfast is a refreshing spot for a weekend break.

You might like to start your trip by viewing the city from the outstanding mountain landscape of Divis and Black Mountain. The National Trust opened the land (previously under private ownership) to the public in 2005.
Skylark, badgers, hares and red grouse are amongst the wildlife that can be spotted at the site. You can also see archaeological evidence from the Bronze Age and early Christian period on the mountain.
If history is of interest, try and fit in a trip to the Ulster Museum. It has some excellent galleries devoted to Ireland from the Flint to Bronze Ages. The museum also contains excavated treasures from the 1588 Spanish Armada (many Spanish ships were lost off the coast of Ireland). Other galleries include those devoted to geology and industrial history.
Also worth a visit is the Georgian estate of Castle Ward at Strangford Lough or the neoclassical architecture of Mount Stewart House and Gardens (now a UNESCO World Heritage site). Both properties are just a short drive outside Belfast.
