The Khoi people were the original inhabitants of Cape Town, but the modern day city was ‘founded’ in 1652 by Dutch settlers. Today, it is a city of extremes – the poor, shanty–town like areas on the outskirts of the city are called the Townships, while at the other end of the spectrum there is a thriving business community with opulence and tower blocks.
All this is coupled with beautiful coastlines and verdant landscapes. The Cape of Good Hope provides plenty of opportunities for hiking and offers amazing ocean views. Sir Francis Drake called it "the most stately thing... the fairest Cape in all the whole circumference of the earth" after traveling the globe from 1579–1580.
