Although Dublin attracts the most visitors, it's by no means Ireland's only city. In south west Ireland is the republic's second largest city, Cork. Built on the banks of the River Lee, it is a pretty city of bridges, steep streets and old buildings. Around Cork, the countryside has lush, rolling hills interlaced with rivers and streams. Along the coast are spectacular beaches and coves punctuated by small fishing villages.
Galway is in the west of Ireland and this university city has a palpable bohemian feel with an energetic nightlife. About thirty miles out into the Atlantic from Galway lie the rugged Aran Islands. The largest, Inis Mór, has a population of about 800. All three islands are beautiful and well worth a visit by ferry.
A trip to Kilkenny is like going back in time. This quaint medieval city has narrow cobbled streets and passageways lined by old shop fronts. It was once Ireland's capital and its history dates back more than 1,500 years.
As well as beautiful, historic and lively cities, Ireland is blessed with stunning scenery. From the cliffs and beaches of Achill Island to the middle age battlements of Yeat's Tower, Ireland's historic monuments, rivers and lakes, hills and cliffs, beaches and coves have a beauty all of their own.
