Israel's three main regions

1. The Coastal Plain is the western strip stretching from Rosh ha-Nikra in the north to the Sinai Peninsula in the south. It is where most of the country's major cities are located, including Tel Aviv and Haifa.


2. The Mountain region stretches from Lebanon in the north to Eilat Bay in the south. The highest peak is the Galilee's Mt Meron, standing 1,208 metres above sea level.


3. The Jordan Valley Rift extends the whole length of Israel from Metula in the north to the Red Sea in the south.

Israel's climate

• The climate in central and northern Israel is Mediterranean.
• The coastal plain is humid during the summer and cooler in the winter while in the mountains the summer is dry and the winter cold.
• Southern and eastern Israel have desert climates with hot, dry weather and varying day-night temperatures. Between the desert and Mediterranean regions there is a semi-arid zone.
