The historic city is built on seven hills with some streets too steep for cars, so funicular railways, trams and an elevator scale several of the heights. To the west of the city sits the Monsanto Forest Park, one of Europe's largest urban parks.
Much of the city centre, the Baxia, was rebuilt after the Great Earthquake of 1755, in an ordered network of wide boulevards inlaid with black and white mosaic pavements, and large squares dominated by statues and fountains. The Baxia is one of Lisbon’s main shopping areas and many of its streets and squares are lined with cafes.
As well as museums, churches, galleries, a medieval castle, café culture and shopping, Lisbon also has a buzzing nightlife, whether is dusk to dawn dancing at a club or sitting back and listening to Lisbon's own musical form, fado, mix of Arabic, African and Portuguese sailor songs.
Lisbon is one of the warmest capitals in Europe, even in winter the temperature rarely falls below 5°C. In the summer it can climb above 30°C.
