If museums are your thing, Lisbon has an eclectic offering, some in the centre, others in the coastal suburb of Belém. There is the Design Museum, the National Museum of Ancient Art and the national Museum of coaches, which houses the largest collection of royal coaches in Europe. You can also visit the museum of puppets, one for traditional Portuguese mosaic tiles and others for the history of radio and of music.
Just behind the Cais do Sodré railway station is the massive Ribeira Nova food market. Staked with stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruit and fish straight from the sea, this is where most of the city’s fine restaurants get their supplies. It’s busy atmosphere and mouth watering wares make it well worth wandering around, especially in the morning when the day’s catch arrives.
Cheap flights to Lisbon are also a ticket to party. Whether it’s the lilting sound of fado singers and guitar players or a hard nights clubbing Lisboans know how to have fun.
For traditional fado, the best areas are Barrio Alto and Alfama. Barrio Alta, with its maze of streets is also where to go if you’re searching for a nightclub or funky bar.
