Artistic city

Madrid is an extremely cultural city, hosting 73 museums and three of Spain's major art galleries along the Paseo del Arte (the Art Walk). The Art Walk is world-famous and comprises the following:

1. The Prado Museum is considered to be one of the best art galleries in the world and features a very impressive collection of 16th, 17th and 20th century artwork including work by Goya, Botticeli and El Greco.
2. The Thyssen Bornemisza Museum has a private collection and exhibits a wide variety of periods and styles from 13th century to avant-garde.
3. The Queen Sofia National Art Centre Museum is the contemporary conclusion to the art walk, famously housing Picasso's Guernika painting among other pieces of modern art.

Madrid's other major cultural highlight is The Royal Palace of Madrid (the Palacio Real de Madrid), which was the former residence of the King of Spain and is richly decorated by artists such as Velázquez, Caravaggio and Goya. It also exhibits some of the royal armoury.
