The striking Urbis building in the city centre draws many visitors merely for its unusual architecture and once inside there is more to capture the imagination. The Bridgewater Hall is a striking concert venue on the banks of the Bridgewater canal in Manchester’s city centre. It hosts over 250 performances each year, including many by the Hallé, one of the country’s longest running orchestras, founded in 1858.
Manchester has several impressive museums. The Museum of Science and Industry is housed in the former Liverpool Road train station, a building itself steeped in history as one of the oldest stations in the world.
There are permanent exhibitions of interactive experiments, historic machinery and scientific instruments and a reconstructed Victorian sewer network that visitors can walk through. There are also regularly updated temporary exhibitions.
