Whether you think romantic breaks should be full of adventure and excitement or plenty of mindless relaxation, a honeymoon is the trip of a lifetime and the journey to find excellence. A mix of the right dose of all the necessary ingredients can make for the perfect recipe, meaning you won’t have any unwanted surprises popping up. You’ll remember the trip for the rest of your life, so that means anything and everything is permitted, you’re even allowed to visit places and have experiences that you never imagined you’d be able to have.

Before your imagination takes flight, it’s important to keep your feet on the ground for a bit longer to decide on the budget. There are many variables that can help keep your wallet happy even when it comes to a honeymoon, and don’t worry, they won’t affect you being able to fulfill your wildest travel dreams. Here are some tips and ideas for an unforgettable, low cost honeymoon.

1. Scenery, there’s no need to go to Polynesia to see it

The definition of a perfect honeymoon usually includes the words romantic, exotic and adventurous. But wait just a minute, who said to get all of these things you have to travel to the other side of the world? In Europe there are places that can be considered paradisiacal too. A few examples? The untamed Montenegro, the Moroccan desert where you can follow in the footsteps of the Berbers, the lunar landscape of the Lofoten Islands, and poetic, intense Scotland. You can book cheap flights to these locations and the magic will still be guaranteed.

2. Roadtrip it

During a honeymoon the most important things are to be in the company of your significant other and to have fun! Often, the best stories come from the unexpected experiences and the journey itself becomes more important than the destination. Choosing an alternative mode of transportation (if you have time) could be a nice way to spend time together and discover the hidden niches in the cities and countries you pass through. So why not consider travelling by car or train?

3. Romantic picnic

If you want to save money on food, the best solution is to choose a hotel with lunch or dinner included and then enjoy a romantic, low cost picnic in the open air for the meal not included with lodging. Moreover, in most destinations street food is a fantastic alternative to restaurants because it allows you to get closer to more genuine local gastronomy.

4. It’s not necessary to go from the altar straight to the airport

Of course it’s romantic to think that right after the ceremony you can disappear amid the applause of your wedding guests and grab a car with “Just Married” painted on the back window and head straight to the airport. But when you seriously think about it, weddings can be stressful and it may be a good option to have a little time to recover after the big day before your escape. If you get married on the weekend, wait until a weekday to find great deals and discounts for honeymooners and spend less.

5. House swap

Glass bottom huts over the water or luxury resort suites are without a doubt beautiful, but often leave you penniless and with the strange feeling that you’ve only lived in one place as a tourist without having the opportunity to immerse yourself in the true spirit of the destination. A good option is to try a house exchange to save money and live like a local. Even in high-demand locations like Fiji, Seychelles, Mauritius or Hawaii you can find couples or families who want to hand over the keys to their property in exchange for a holiday in the UK.
