The plane was late taking off due to a passenger incident: a man in the row behind started to cough vomit and then had what looked like a seizure. He and his companions did not speak Spanish or English so they could not answer LATAM staff’s questions about his medical history or if he had any allergies. Better training would have made the situation less for the passenger doctors on board who tried to treat him and the other passengers. The crew did not use an online translation service to help with communication. Eventually the sick passenger was evacuated from the aircraft. The flight left about 45 minutes late. I asked a crew member if I would be able to get my connecting flight to Rio and she said that I would just make my way to international connections. When I arrived at the gate for my flight from Santiago to Rio the airline staff member at the desk was rude and obtrusive. She told me that I could not board as my baggage was not loaded onto the plane. When I questioned this and asked for help she ignored me. When I asked again she finally told me to go to Gate 17 but with no explanation as to why. Gate 17 was unstaffed I had no idea why I was there... I saw the elevator and went back through security to the LATAM desk. The staff had no idea that the flight from La Paz had been delayed we had to explain to them. They were helpful and told us to have some food with a voucher and return to the desk in one hour. We were issued with boarding passes for a flight to São Paulo and another to Rio. The 16.30 flight to São Paulo took off one hour late. We were sitting on the plane for over an hour with no explanation or apology. I finally arrived in Rio at 1am 6 hours after I should have arrived if I’d been able to take the flight from Santiago to Rio. I arrived early in the morning in a city. As s lone female traveller this is a situation I avoid. My bag did not arrive. A helpful airport staff member tracked my bag to São Paulo and I had to complete forms for its retrieval. I finally arrived at my accommodation at 2.20am. If LATAM staff had with each other then all this stress could have been avoided. The ground staff were completely unaware that the flight from La Paz has been delayed and that this would cause problems for connecting flights. There should have been a LATAM representative to meet passengers with connecting flights to advise and support. Instead it was a complete mess. I would not recommend LATAM therefore and will try to avoid flying with this airline in the future.
