Discover the Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle stands as a fairy-tale retreat perched high in the Bavarian Alps, built by King Ludwig II to escape the public eye. Its soaring white towers and delicate turrets look as though they have been lifted straight from a storybook, providing a glimpse into the king's fascination with romantic myths. Exploring the opulent interior reveals a world of theatrical design and artistic detail that makes a trip to the Bavarian region truly memorable.

Tips & details for your visit

Because it is one of the most visited spots in Europe, you should plan your visit well in advance, especially since you can only see the inside by joining a formal group.

Getting inside the gates

To see the interior, you must join a 35-minute guided tour. These tours are strictly timed, so you need to be at the entrance exactly when your slot begins. Tickets are in high demand and often sell out weeks ahead, so booking online before you arrive is the best way to ensure you don't miss out.

An entry fee applies to everyone, though children under 18 years usually get in for free when accompanied by an adult. You will need to collect your physical tickets or check in at the Ticket Centre in the village below before starting the 1.5-mile uphill trek to the entrance. Please check the official landmark site for up-to-date information regarding opening hours and ticket availability.

Exploring the royal rooms

The architecture is a mix of styles that looks like it belongs in a storybook, with tall limestone towers and pointed turrets. Inside, the Throne Hall is particularly impressive, even though a throne was never actually placed there. It features a massive chandelier shaped like a crown and intricate mosaics on the floor.

You will also see the Singers' Hall, which is decorated with scenes from German legends. The king was a huge fan of Richard Wagner’s operas, and you can see that influence in every room. One of the strangest features is a small, man-made Grotto built inside the palace, complete with artificial rocks and colourful lights to mimic a cave.

The story behind the stone

Construction began in 1869 for King Ludwig II, who wanted a private sanctuary away from the public eye. He spent a fortune on the project, but he only lived inside the walls for a total of 172 days before his mysterious death. At the time of his passing, the castle was still unfinished, and many of the planned rooms were never completed.

Despite being built to look like a medieval fortress, it was actually quite modern for its time. It was equipped with a battery-powered bell system for the servants and even had running water on every floor. Shortly after the king died in 1886, the doors were opened to the public, turning his private hideaway into a global attraction.
