What to see in Portrush

Don’t miss the Giant’s Causeway. Steeped in folklore, the 40,000 six-sided basalt columns are often considered to be the eighth wonder of the world. If you like a tipple, stop off at the Bushmills distillery nearby, where they’ve been making whiskey since the 1600s. If nature is more your thing, go wildlife spotting at the Portrush Coastal Zone. Kids will love Barry’s Amusements, a classic amusement park with rides suitable for the entire family. For additional fun, there’s also Waterworld, with its waterslides and ten pin bowling.

Take some buckets and spades to East Strand Beach or head further east on the coast to White Rocks, with its limestone cliffs and archway formations. Climb up to Dunluce Castle for a glimpse of what County Antrim was like in the 1500s. The castle ruins are still imposing, and offer sweeping views of the sea and landscape below. Take a boat trip around the Skerries, the rocky islands lying just off the Portrush coast. They provide a breeding ground for many seabirds, and offer plenty of hiking opportunities.

Where to stay in Portrush

Book a Portrush hotel to discover the stunning scenery of the Giant’s Causeway: it’s less than 20 minutes from town by car. If you’re a keen cyclist, you can reach it in just over an hour by pedal power! Stay close to the beach to enjoy a traditional seaside holiday, or book a hotel in the town centre for easy access to the castle, Waterworld, and the Royal Portrush Golf Club. You’ll also be perfectly placed for exploring the town’s two beaches: West Strand with its walking and cycle path, and the quieter East Strand on the other side of the peninsula.

Stay close to Main Street to enjoy a selection of bars, restaurants, and fun arcades, or book a hotel close to the harbour if you're seeking a more leisurely pace. Here, you’ll have easy access to the cliff trails over Ramore Head, and the pretty harbour with its fishing boats and choice of restaurants. Just east on the coast is the sleepy fishing village of Portballintrae. Here you’ll find hiking and picnic opportunities, the ancient Lissanduff earthworks, and the quaint Bushfoot Golf Club.
