St Petersburg is an exciting city brimming with historical sights, imperial architecture and a well-preserved cultural heritage. Founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great, it arose from swampland to become Russia's cultural and artistic centre and one of the most opulent capitals of its time until the Russian Revolution in 1917. Nowadays the skyline is decorated by sumptuous baroque and neoclassical buildings and trips to St Petersburg, Russia's second largest city after Moscow, are defined by visits to emblematic sights such as the Palace Square, statues and fountains of the Alexandrovsky Garden and the Nevsky Prospekt.
