Garuda was founded in 1949 and is the Indonesian flag carrier airline named after a Hindu holy bird, which also features in the country's emblem. Garuda Indonesia operates mainly out of Soekarno Hatta International Airport where it currently has its headquarters situated. It also has major hubs at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport and Kualanamu International Airport, as well as smaller hubs at Juanda International Airport and Sultan Aji Muhammed Sulaiman Airport. It primary focus cities are located at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport and Adisucipto International Airport. The airline's fleet is made up of over 140 Airbus, ATR, Bombardier and Boeing aircraft.

There are Garuda flights available to more than 70 international and 60 domestic destinations. Its flights to Jakarta, Paris, Rome, Los Angeles and Tokyo are often popular with passengers, although there are many others routes that are also regularly flown. In addition to 16 non-alliance codeshare agreements with airlines including Royal Brunei, All Nippon Airways and Turkish Airlines, it is also a member of the SkyTeam alliance.

Online check-in

Online check-in is available for both domestic and international Garuda Indonesia flights. Passengers with the airline can check in online up to 24 hours prior to their flight's departure. The latest that they can do so is 4 hours before departure; unless they are flying from Jakarta in which case online check-in is open until 2 hours prior to take-off. Passengers can also check in at the airline's sales office by phoning its call centre using their mobile phones. This service is available between 24 hours and 4 hours before a flight is scheduled to leave. Internet, mobile and call centre check-in are not possible for infants under 2, group bookings of more than 9 people or passengers who need assistance at the airport.

Hand luggage allowance

Hand luggage on Garuda Indonesia flights is subject to a weight limit of 7 kg. Each passenger is entitled to 1 item of hand luggage that they can carry on board their flight as long as its combined width, length and height are not greater than 115 cm. On some aircraft the maximum combined dimensions are decreased to 92 cm. Passengers can also bring necessary mobility equipment into the cabin, such as a collapsible wheelchair, crutches or cane. Items that exceed this allowance will count as checked baggage and will go towards a passenger's checked luggage allowance. If checked luggage is deemed to be in excess of airline limitations, passengers will be charged for carriage of the luggage in question.

Checked baggage allowance

Checked luggage allowances on Garuda Indonesia are based on a weight concept. Within those weight allowances, it should be noted that the airline will not accept any single item of baggage which weighs more than 32 kg. Economy passengers are entitled to 20 kg of checked luggage, Business class passengers are entitled to 30 kg and First class passengers are entitled to 40 kg. Infants who have their own seat booked are entitled to 10 kg in Economy or Business class and 20 kg in First class. Infants who do not have a seat booked are entitled to 10 kg. Passengers travelling with an infant can also bring a stroller or car seat for their child.

We were denied boarding at Malaysian Airlines as we have been advise the transit time not adequate enough to transfer our luggage to the next flight. We have been advised by malaysian airlines the standard MTC time for transit on difference airlines minimum of 3 hours.
