Air Astana

About Air Astana

Air Astana is a regional airline that operates within the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is also the national flag carrier airline of the Kazakhstan and has its headquarters in Almaty, the country's capital city. The airline was founded in late 2001 by both BAE Systems and the Samruk Kazyna Wealth Fund, plus had its first flight in early 2002. The Air Astana fleet comprises 30 aircraft, mostly Embraer 190s and Airbus A320s.

Air Astana offers both international and domestic flights from its main hub at Almaty International Airport in Kazakhstan in addition to its other hub at Astana International Airport. Most of its flights are domestic, however routes to nearby Asian and European countries are also available. Some of the airline's most popular routes include the Air Astana flights to Seoul, Baku, Tbilisi, Saint Petersburg and Beijing. While it has not yet joined an airline alliance, it does have codeshare agreements with a number of airlines, namely Air India, Austrian Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines.

Online check-in

Air Astana online check-in can be completed between 24 hours and 60 minutes ahead of a flight's scheduled takeoff time. Online check-in is available on all of its routes and can be completed using a booking reference number or an e-ticket number. As part of the Air Astana online check-in process, passengers are able to select seats for their flight and print their boarding card. Young passengers, adult passengers with small children, senior passengers and passengers who have asked for assistance can check in online but will have to go to an airport check-in counter to receive their boarding cards. Children travelling without an adult cannot check in online and will have to do so at the airport.

Hand luggage allowance

Air Astana's hand luggage policy stipulates the Economy passengers are allowed to bring 1 item onboard while Business class passengers are permitted to bring 2. The maximum permissible size for these items should be no more than 56 x 45 x 25 cm. In addition to their hand luggage allowance, passengers will be allowed to bring certain personal items with them onto the airplane. Personal items would include a laptop computer, a coat, a blanket, an umbrella, a wheelchair, a walking stick, a handbag or a briefcase. Passengers can also bring a pet carrier as hand luggage, up to a maximum weight of 8 kg and a maximum size of 30 x 47 x 27 cm.

Checked baggage allowance

Passengers are entitled to check baggage weighing up to a maximum of 20 kg if they are travelling in Economy class or 30 kg if they are travelling in Business class. Children's strollers or carrying baskets will be transported without any extra charge. There is an excess baggage charge applicable to anyone who does not stay within the limits of their luggage allowance. This will be payable on a per kilo basis. If any single item of luggage exceeds a maximum weight of 32 kg, Air Astana will refuse to carry it for safety reasons and the passenger will be asked to find an alternative solution to transport the piece in question.

Overall Air Astana were a very nice airline to travel with however a few things lowered the score slightly. 1. I booked a window seat specifically for the 2nd flight however the plane layout was different and I ended up in an aisle seat. 2. No vegetarian/vegan snack was offered to me on the 2nd flight. I ensured I confirmed my dietary requirements before flying and reminded the onboard crew but there was no alternative snack offered. Eating the one provided would have caused an allergic reaction so it’s good that I checked the ingredients. 3. No individual entertainment system on the 2nd flight of nearly 7hrs was unexpected.
