Direct flights from London to Düsseldorf take around 1 hour and 20 minutes, making it a quick and convenient journey for both business and leisure travellers. Flight times may vary slightly depending on the airline, route and weather conditions.

There are six airports in London, three of which provide flights to Düsseldorf and one with flights to Cologne:

London Heathrow (LHR): Heathrow is the UK’s busiest airport, located west of London. There are three underground terminal stations and frequent connections running every 10 minutes between Central London to the airport via the Piccadilly Line. There are also shuttle buses which can transport you between the terminals around every six minutes.

London Gatwick (LGW): Gatwick provides a lot of cheap flights and is just 30 miles from Central London. The Gatwick Express train service runs every 30 minutes and can take you to the airport from London Victoria Station.

London City (LCY): London City Airport is just 7 miles from Central London, making it the closest airport to the city centre. To get there, you can take the DLR Underground service which runs around every 8 to 15 minutes from Canning Town.

London Stansted (STN): If you choose to fly with Ryanair to Cologne, then you will depart from Stansted Airport, located northeast of London near the M11. The best way to get there from Central London is via the Stansted Express train service which runs every 15 to 30 minutes.

There are 2 airports in Düsseldorf, though flights from London will take you to Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS), which has three terminals and is just 4 miles from downtown Düsseldorf. Once you've arrived, you can travel to the city centre via train, bus or taxi:

Train

• The S11 SkyTrain runs regularly from Flughafen Terminal (S) at the airport train station to the Central Station (Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof) and takes just 8 minutes.

Bus

Several buses go from the station in front of the arrivals hall, including:

• 721: Tannenhof to Düsseldorf Railway Station
• 760: Ratingen to Düsseldorf-Wittlaer-Bockum and Rosspfad
• SB51: Kaarst-Rathaus to Düsseldorf-Nordfriedhof

Taxi

• You can book a taxi outside the arrivals exit doors at any time of day (and night). Though the most convenient travel option for getting straight to your hotel from the airport in Düsseldorf, it is the priciest option.

If you don't mind a slightly longer journey to your accommodation, flights from Stansted take you to Cologne's Koeln-Bonn Airport (CGN). The journey from CGN to Düsseldorf city centre takes around 35 to 50 minutes by car or taxi and 30 minutes to 1 hour by rail, depending on which route you take. Many trains run daily between the airport and Düsseldorf, with the main operators including Thalys, ICE or DB.

Düsseldorf Airport serves 16 million passengers per year, so you can rest assured that it’s well-equipped and designed to be accessible for passengers with reduced mobility. Here is a list of some of its facilities:

• Free Wi-Fi
• Luggage storage
• ATMs, banks and currency exchange services
• Pharmacies, baby care facilities and a dentist
• Lounges, including the Lufthansa Business Lounge

The best time to visit Düsseldorf depends on a range of factors including your budget and the climate.

Like the UK, Germany experiences all four seasons. November to March are the coldest months, with temperatures rarely creeping over 10℃. There’s also the most chance of rain during these months. April is when temperatures start to pick up and June to August are the hottest months, with temperatures averaging 26℃ before it drops slightly in September.

While late spring to summer is great if you have plans to do any outdoor activities, April and September are also ideal months to travel if you want pleasant temperatures and the least chance of rain.

On the other hand, if you’re hoping to snatch up a bargain whilst avoiding the holiday crowds, then booking a trip sometime between January to March or October to November will yield some of the cheapest results as the demand for flights will be lower.
