Getting to and from the airport

London has five international airports; Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Luton and Stansted. Heathrow and Gatwick airports account for the largest passenger numbers, with Heathrow Airport being the busiest airport in London and Gatwick following a close second. Heathrow Airport has five terminals and - in addition to its other features - can boast two runways which run parallel.

With Heathrow Airport being the biggest airport in London, it stands to reason that most international flights would be found here. If you are going to Spain, flights from Heathrow to Madrid are no hassle at all. Book yourself that ticket and get ready to land in Spain!

Getting to London airport

Travelling to the airports has never been easier. If you are going to Heathrow Airport (approximately 22km from the city), you can catch the Heathrow Express from Paddington Station. Gatwick Express, found at London Victoria Station, gets you to Gatwick Airport (a bit of a distance from the city at approximately 45km) efficiently. If you are going to Stansted Airport (further afield at 64km from the city centre), the Stansted Express will get you to your destination. The express trains are hailed as the fastest and most efficient way to travel. Catching a flight from Gatwick to Madrid? You will be able to travel from both the North and South terminals.

Arriving to Madrid

Madrid, the capital of Spain, is the pulsating and culturally vibrant city that will leave you wanting more. Fancy some art? The Museo Nacional del Prado art museum will give you a fresh perspective on European art. Perhaps you want to experience the hustle and bustle of Madrid in its true spirit. In that case, visit the Plaza Mayor Square to check out the restaurants and mingle with the locals.

Walking distance from Mayor Square is La Puerta del Sol square. Admire the majestic poise of the buildings in and around the square. If you feel like splurging a little, The Rastro Flea Market is the place to go (open on Sundays and holidays).

How to get to the city centre

Flights to Madrid from Stansted will get you to Madrid's main airport Adolfo Suárez Madrid - Barajas Airport. Located not far from the city centre of Madrid at a mere 12km on the northeast of the city, getting to and from the airport is convenient. The airport has four passenger terminals.

There are different transport options from the airport to the city centre. You could use a taxi, which can be found on all four terminals of the airport. Alternatively, you could use Metro Line 8 - Aeropuerto T4 (located on terminal T4), which has two stations. Urban and intercity bus lines can also be found at the airport.
