About Air Zimbabwe

Originally known as Air Rhodesia, Air Zimbabwe was founded in 1967 but did not commence operations until 1980. It is Zimbabwe's national flag carrier airline with its headquarters located in Zimbabwe's capital city of Harare. It is also currently owned by the Zimbabwean government. Air Zimbabwe has a slightly patchy history, having discontinued operations twice in 2012 due to financial difficulties. It then once again restarted its regional service in 2013 and operates a fleet of 7 Boeing and Airbus planes on all of its routes.

From its hub at Harare International Airport, it serves 6 African destinations. These are Johannesburg in South Africa, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Lusaka in Zambia and Bulewayo, Kariba and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Prior to its aforementioned financial difficulties, Air Zimbabwe served a much wider network of destinations that included London Gatwick Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport and Dubai International Airport. Since 1981 it has held membership in the African Airlines Association and in the International Air Transport Association.

Online check-in

Passengers cannot check in online for Air Zimbabwe flights and can only check-in at an airport. When doing so, passengers should make sure they arrive 2 hours before the departure of an international flight and at least 90 minutes prior to takeoff for a domestic flight. After checking in, passengers will receive their boarding card and can then proceed to security. It is also important to note that the airline requires passengers to confirm their return Air Zimbabwe fares within 72 hours of their outbound flight's departure. They should contact the airline to do this. If they do not, their return booking will be canceled.

Hand luggage allowance

Air Zimbabwe allows its passengers to bring hand luggage weighing up to 8 kg that must not be larger than 51 x 20 x 38 cm. Passengers are also allowed to bring personal items including handbags, coats, cameras, walking sticks and laptops into the cabin as an extra item without charge. Passengers may bring a child's carrycot along with baby food, diapers and other necessary items up to a maximum weight of 12 kg. If hand luggage exceeds what is allowed, it will have to be checked into the hold and passengers will be charged accordingly.

On the airline's Harare to Johannesburg route, Economy passengers may bring 2 items of luggage each weighing a maximum of 20 kg, while Business class passengers can check 2 items of luggage each weighing a maximum of 25 kg. On the airline's Harare to Lusaka route, Economy passengers may bring 2 items of luggage each weighing a maximum of 10 kg.
