About LIAT

LIAT is a Caribbean airline that's based in the city of Antigua. The company's full name is Leewards Islands Air Transport Services, of which LIAT is an acronym. It operates from headquarters at VC Bird International Airport on Antigua and has two secondary bases located at Grantley Adams International Airport on Barbados and Piarco International Airport in Trinidad and Tobago. It was founded in 1956 and increased its operating capacity in 2007 by merging with Caribbean Star Airlines, previously its main competitor in the region.

LIAT owns a fleet of 10 ATR aircraft and is focused on inter-island flights to 17 destinations within the Caribbean. Many, if not all of its destinations are holiday hotspots such as Port-au-Prince in Haiti, St. Kitts or Fort-de-France in Martinique. Although it previously had a codeshare agreement with Carib Aviation, this ended in 2007 when the other carrier ceased operations. It currently has partnerships with Jetblue Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Pawa Dominicana.

Online check-in

Passengers who will be travelling with only hand luggage can check in online for LIAT flights. They can do so any time from 24 hours before their flight up until 2 hours before it is scheduled to take-off. Online check-in is not an option for flights departing from St. Thomas, Dominica, St. Vincent and Tortola, Anguilla, St. Croix, Dominican Republic or Guyana.

Online check-in is also not available for groups of more than 9 passengers, children flying unaccompanied or passengers needing assistance at the airport. Passengers who have luggage to check in or who fall into one of the aforementioned categories must go to one of the company's airport check-in counters in order to check in.

Hand luggage allowance

Passengers are entitled to bring 1 piece of hand luggage on board their LIAT flight. This can weigh up to 7 kg and must not be larger than 53 x 35 x 20 cm, including wheels, handles, pockets and any other protrusions. This is in order to make sure that it will fit into the storage areas available on the plane.

If passengers exceed their designated allowance by bringing extra items of hand luggage or items that are deemed too heavy, their hand luggage will have to be checked into the aircraft's hold. There will be an extra charge for this and if there is no room for the luggage, it may also be put onto a later flight.

Checked baggage allowance

All passengers on a LIAT flight are entitled to check in 1 item of luggage weighing up to a maximum of 23 kg. Passengers' luggage must also have a combined width, length and height of no more than 157 cm. Any luggage with does not conform to these limitations will be subject to additional charges. The airlines will also accept 1 piece of sports luggage per passenger. Extra fees may be applicable depending on the type of sports equipment in question. The company will refuse to check in any luggage item that weighs more than 32 kg or has combined dimensions of more than 292 cm, due to health and safety considerations.
