About Silkair

SilkAir is a regional airline that's headquartered in Singapore. It was founded as Tradewinds Charters in 1976 and is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, which it uses to fly to regional destinations in the Singapore Airlines network. The company began scheduled services in 1989 and was rebranded with the current name in 1991. The airline's hub is at Singapore Changi Airport where its 31 aircraft are also based. This fleet is made up of Airbus A319, Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 planes.

From its hub in Singapore, it flies to more than 50 destinations in Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia and Australia. The airline flies to many popular locations such as Siem Reap, Lombok, Kuala Lumpur and Hanoi. It also offers passengers a wider range of options through codeshare agreements with Bangkok Airways, Vistara, Virgin Australia, Garuda Indonesia, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Air New Zealand and Shenzhen Airlines.

Online check-in

Online check-in is available on some but not all SilkAir flights. If passengers are departing from an eligible airport, they can check in online from 48 hours before a SilkAir flight. This allows them to choose a seat for the flight and also to print out their boarding card. The latest that passengers can check in online is two hours before their flight is scheduled to take off. If they have luggage to check in, passengers can do this at the airport check-in counters. If they are traveling with just hand luggage, passengers can go straight to security and the boarding gate.

Hand luggage allowance

Economy passengers on a SilkAir flight can take 1 item of hand luggage weighing up to 7 kg onboard the plane. Business class passengers can take 2 items of hand luggage on board the flight, each of which can weigh up to 7 kg. All items of hand luggage must have a combined height, width and length of no more than 115 cm. On top of these allowances, passengers are also allowed to take 1 personal item with them on the flight. Acceptable personal items are handbags, laptop bags, camera bags, coats, umbrellas, document bags, duty-free purchases, canes or crutches and baby food.

Checked baggage allowance

On most of its routes the airline operates checked luggage allowances on the weight concept. On SilkAir flights where the weight concept applies, Economy class passengers may bring up to 30 kg of checked luggage while Business class passengers may bring up to 40 kg of checked luggage. KrisFlyer Elite Gold members are entitled to an additional 20 kg on top of their ticketed allowance. On flights to or from the United States or Brazil, baggage allowances are by the piece concept. The airline stipulates that Economy class passengers are allowed to check in 2 pieces of luggage each weighing up to 23 kg on United States routes and 32 kg on Brazil routes. Business class passengers can check in 2 pieces of luggage, each weighing up to 32 kg. Children under 2 years old are allowed 10 kg and a stroller. Passengers exceeding their allowance will be charged. The airline will not carry any item weighing more than 32 kg.
