Alitalia, Italy's flag carrier airline, is owned by CAI (Compagnie Aérienne Italienne). The company's headquarters is based in Fiumicino, Rome. Alitalia's main flight hub is at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport in Rome. They also maintain hubs in Milan, Palermo, and Naples International Airport. In 2017, Alitalia was voted as one of Europe's most punctual airlines, placing third after Air Baltic and Aer Lingus.
Alitalia has codeshare partnerships with over 40 different airlines, including Virgin Australia and Aeroflot. Alitalia is also a member of the SkyTeam Alliance. In 2010, three other airlines joined Alitalia to form a transatlantic joint venture; whereby Alitalia, Delta, Air France, and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines made an agreement to share all the profits from flights across the Atlantic.
Alitalia offers a frequent flyer program known as "MilleMiglia", which translates as "a thousand miles". Similar to other airline loyalty programs, flyers can collect mile points which can be redeemed for the privileged use of airline lounges, flight upgrades, and free flights, amongst other benefits. Alitalia is also connected to the SkyTeam Alliance, which allows customers to collect miles and redeem them with other participating partners.
Alitalia's online check-in process is simple, secure, and straightforward. If you are flying to or from the UK, Brazil, or Egypt, you will need to provide your passport information. Online check-in is available the day before your flight is scheduled for departure, except for flights which depart from Amsterdam and Paris. For these locations, online check-in is available up to 30 hours prior to scheduled departure times. During check-in, you can select your seats, as well as upgrade seating to Extra Comfort Seats. In addition, you can also print boarding passes for when you arrive at the airport. Bags can be checked-in and dropped off at any of the dedicated baggage counters available at most airports upon arrival.
The Alitalia baggage policy states that bags must be less than 158 cm in overall size, which includes the total height, length, and width added together. The general allowance is one bag up to 23 kg. Weight limits can vary depending on the ticket class, as well as the specific flight route. For example, with Premium Economy tickets and Comfort Routes from Rome to Milan, flyers are allowed up to two bags. The baggage allowance for Business Class increases to two bags up to 32 kg each. If you have Light Fare tickets, there is no allowance for hold baggage included, but you may purchase baggage allowance if needed.
Cardboard boxes may be accepted for carriage under certain circumstances, but they must be wrapped securely in clingfilm or cellophane. In addition, boxes must adhere to size restriction policies, and they must be clearly labelled with the name and contact details of the passenger. This last point is valid for all luggage, as bags that are clearly labelled with easy-to-find contact information makes it easier to return items in the rare and unfortunate event that baggage is misplaced.
Please do not place matches, lithium batteries, e-cigarettes, or lighters inside your hold luggage. If you need to transport these types of items, they should be placed inside your cabin baggage and kept with you for the duration of the flight.
The Alitalia hand luggage allowance limits each person to one carry-on bag. Bags must weigh less than 8 kg and not exceed the maximum size limitations of 55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm. Bags must be able to fit into the overhead bins or under the seat in front of you, but please be aware that bulkhead seats do not have space underneath them. For peace of mind, there are usually measuring stands available near airport check-in counters, so if you find that your baggage is too large, you can check it into the hold before it is refused at the gate. You may also bring one personal item into the cabin with you, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or briefcase. Please be aware that if you are travelling with a personal item and a larger cabin bag, one must be stowed inside the overhead lockers and the other should be placed under the seat in front of you.
Tools, replica firearms, and other dangerous items that pose potential threats are not allowed inside the cabin. This includes scissors, penknives, and pencil sharpeners. Additionally, although e-cigarettes and lighters must be carried inside your hand luggage, smoking is not permitted inside the cabin.
There are also aviation rules regarding the carrying and transport of liquids, gels, and aerosols on planes. This includes toothpaste, moisturisers, and creamy cosmetics. These types of substances are permitted only in containers that contain a maximum volume of 100ml, with a limit of ten containers per passenger. Containers must be placed inside clear plastic bags, measuring no larger than 20 cm x 20 cm.
