JetBlue Airways

About JetBlue Airways

JetBlue Airways is the United States' fifth biggest airline after American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, and is based just outside of New York City in neighbouring Long Island City. It is a low-cost carrier operating mainly out of John F. Kennedy International Airport with additional operations at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport, Long Beach Airport, Luis Munoz International Airport and Orlando International Airport. It operates a large fleet of more than 200 Airbus and Embraer airplanes.

Most of its routes are within the United States, however there are also JetBlue flights to destinations in the Caribbean and Central America, such as Bermuda, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. The airline flies to nearly 100 destinations including holiday hotspots such as Grand Cayman, Orlando, Punta Cana, Palm Springs, New Orleans and more. JetBlue Airways also has codeshare agreements with a large number of other carriers such as Aer Lingus, Hawaiian Airlines, Royal Air Maroc and Cathay Pacific.

Online check-in

Passengers can check-in online for a JetBlue flight up to 24 hours from take-off and until 1 hour and a half prior to its departure. They can check in using their booking confirmation code and can also use the service to choose seats or add baggage allowance for their flight. Passengers can either print out their boarding card or have a mobile version delivered to their smartphone. There are also self-service kiosks available to print boarding cards at the airport. Passengers who have booked as a group of more than 9 people cannot check in online; nor can children travelling unaccompanied and passengers requiring assistance at the airport.

Hand luggage allowance

Passengers can carry 1 bag such as a backpack or small suitcase, and 1 personal item such as a handbag, laptop or briefcase on board their JetBlue flight. The bag must be smaller than 55 x 35 x 22 cm, including protruding handles or wheels, in order to ensure that it will fit in the cabin's overhead storage lockers. The personal item must be smaller than 43 x 33 x 30 cm, again including protruding handles or wheels, in order to ensure that it fits beneath the airplane's seats. The airline does not specify a weight limit for these items.

Checked baggage allowance

Checked baggage allowance on JetBlue flights is dependant on the fare type booked by a passenger. The Blue fare, which is the airline's lowest level, does not include any checked luggage allowance, however passengers can add this to their online booking if they wish. The Blue Plus fare includes 1 item of checked luggage per passenger weighing up to 23 kg with a maximum combined width, height and length of 158 cm. The highest tier of the airline's fare types is called Blue Flex. This ticket allows passengers to check in 2 items of luggage each weighing up to 23 kg and limited to 158 cm in combined dimensions. Some sporting equipment such as golf bags can be carried as part of a passenger's checked baggage allowance.
