Air Italy

INFORMATION UPDATE: Air Italy has shut down their operations, and are no longer offering Air Italy flights. The information below refers to the period Air Italy was still operating.

Meridiana is an Italian carrier based on the island of Sardinia. It was founded in the 1960s with the purpose of providing a link between Sardinia and mainland Italy. The airline's headquarters are in Olbia with its main hub located in nearby Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport. The company maintains smaller hubs at 5 other airports. These are Naples International Airport, Verona Villafranca Airport, Milan Linate Airport, Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino airport. A fleet of over 20 planes are used by the company to fly to more than 50 destinations including Meridiana's Gatwick, Ibiza, Milan, Vari, Cagliari and Athens. Its fleet is made up of McDonnell and of Boeing aircraft.

Meridiana merged with Eurofly in 2010, making it Italy's second biggest airline after Alitalia. It has several codeshare agreements set up but has not joined an alliance. Its codeshare flights are with Blue Panorama, Air Berlin, Iberia, S7 Airlines, Air Moldova, Air Malta and Blue Air.

Online check-in

Online check-in is not available on all flights, although Meridiana's Gatwick route does offer this possibility. When available, online check-in opens a week before a flight is due to leave and closes 2 hours before take-off. Seat selection can be made during online check-in, although there is an extra fee if passengers make use of this option. Seat selection becomes free within 30 hours of take-off. Passengers can also check in using an airport's check-in counters. Meridiana's airport check-in opens 2 hours before a flight and closes 35 minutes before departure for domestic flights. It opens two and a half hours before and closes 45 minutes before take-off for international flights. Some particular destinations have different opening times for check-in counters, so passengers should check before they fly.

Hand luggage allowance

Hand luggage allowance stipulations on a Meridiana flight permit 1 main item plus 1 personal item. The main hand luggage item must be smaller than 55 x 40 x 20 cm and must weigh less than 8 kg. The personal item must be smaller than 40 x 30 x 15 cm and examples of acceptable items include laptop bags, handbags, camera bags and more. If a passenger's hand luggage exceeds their allowance, either because it's being too big or weighs too much, they will be charged a fee to have it checked into the flight's hold along with the checked baggage. In a situation where the hand luggage of passengers is within their allowance but does not fit in the cabin, it will be checked free of charge.

Checked baggage allowance

Checked baggage allowance on Meridiana flights is different for domestic and international flights. On domestic flights, the allowances for Basic Economy passengers mean that they're able to take 1 piece of luggage with a maximum weight of 23 kg, while Fly-Pass passengers are entitled to 1 item weighing up to 30 kg and Premium Economy passengers permitted to bring 2 items weighing up to 23 kg each. Infants have a 10 kg allowance.

Checked luggage stipulations for international flights entail 1 item of up to 23 kg for Economy passengers, 1 item of up to 30 kg for either Business class passengers or Fly-Pass economy passengers, and 2 items weighing up to 30 kg each for Fly-Pass and Business class passengers. Infants are allowed 10 kg of baggage. In all classes and on all routes, luggage items may not a combined height, length and width of 158 cm. Charges will apply to overweight or oversized baggage.

My flight was cancelled due to the fact Air Italy has gone into bankruptcy (which makes this survey pointless). I look forward to receiving my refund!
