About Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines was founded in 1951 and is the Japanese flag carrier airline. In 2001, it merged with Japan Air System to form the Japan Airlines System. The airline's headquarters are in Japan's capital city, Tokyo, and it has operating hubs in both of that city's airports, Haneda International Airport and Narita International Airport. It also has smaller, secondary hubs at Osaka International Airport and Kansai International Airport, plus focuses on Fukuoka Airport, New Chitose Airport, Naha Airport and Chubu Centrair International Airport.

Japan Airlines has a large fleet of 170 airplanes that fly to more than 90 destinations all over the world. Among these, New York, Shanghai, London Heathrow and Seoul are some of its busiest routes. Since 2007, it has been a part of the oneworld alliance. As well as its partnerships with other oneworld members, it also has codeshare agreements in place with several additional carriers. These are Emirates, Air France, Air Tahiti Nui and WestJet.

Online check-in

Online check-in for Japan Airlines flights is open from 72 hours before a flight up until 1 hour before it is scheduled to leave. Exceptions to this are flights to or from Australia or the United States, where online check-in opens 24 hours in advance of a flight instead. Passengers can also choose a seat for their flight during online check-in. To access this service, passengers will need their reservation number. When they are done, they can then print out their boarding card. Online check-in is not possible for passengers on a group booking of more than 9 people or passengers requiring special assistance.

Hand luggage allowance

All passengers can bring 1 item of hand luggage on board their Japan Airlines flight. This may not weigh more than 10 kg and must be smaller than 55 x 40 x 25 cm. Hand luggage must fit beneath the aircraft's seats or in the storage lockers overhead. In addition, they may also bring 1 smaller personal item such as a handbag or briefcase onto the flight. Luggage that does not conform to these limitations, whether because it is too big or simply too heavy, will have to be processed as checked luggage at the departure gate. Passengers will then most likely be charged a fee this.

Checked baggage allowance

Checked luggage allowance on a Japan Airlines flight is determined by a passenger's cabin class. If they are travelling in Economy or Premium Economy class, passengers can check in 2 items of luggage. Each of these may weigh up to 23 kg. If they are travelling on a Business or First class ticket, passengers can check in 3 items of luggage. Each of these may weigh up of 32 kg. All checked luggage items must have a combined width, length and height that is less than 203cm, including handles, wheels and pockets. Infants may also bring a stroller or car seat. Passengers who exceed their allowance will have to pay a surcharge.
