About Westjet

WestJet is a low-cost airline Canadian that was established in 1996 and initially only flew to the destinations of Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna and Winnipeg. Its current headquarters are located in Calgary, Alberta and it has hubs at Calgary International Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport. Its primary focus for operations is on Edmonton International Airport, Vancouver International Airport and Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. It schedules flights using a combination of Boeing 737 and 767 aircraft.

With its fleet of more than 110 planes, it flies to 100 destinations in 20 different countries across the Americas and Europe. Among these routes, WestJet's flights to Las Vegas, Orlando, Vancouver and London Gatwick are some of the most popular. Although the airline has a partnership with the oneworld, it is not a full member of the airline alliance. It also has active codeshare arrangements with 15 different carriers, including Aeromexico, Qantas Airways and Delta Airlines.

Online check-in

Using their booking reference number, passengers can check in for a WestJet flight up to 24 hours before they are due to depart. Online check-in closes again 1 hour before take-off. In addition to printing their boarding cards, passengers have other options open to them via online check-in, such as the ability to select or change their seat allocation, add luggage allowance to their booking or switch to an earlier flight. If passengers prefer to check in at the airport, they can do so up to 3 hours in advance of their scheduled departure time. Passengers must check in at the airport if they have an extra seat, are in a group of more than 9 passengers, are departing from the Dominican Republic or Cuba, have booked an extra seat, or are a child travelling unaccompanied.

Hand luggage allowance

Each passenger on a WestJet flight can bring 1 item of hand luggage as long as it is not larger than 53 x 23 x 38 cm. They're also allowed to carry a personal item on-board of up to 41 x 15 x 33 cm in size, such as a garment bag, briefcase, handbag, laptop bag or camera. In addition to these 2 items, the airline will also accept diaper bags, car seats, strollers for personal use, cremains or duty-free purchases. The airline provides sizing devices to review the dimensions of passengers' hand luggage. If hand luggage is too large, it will have to be checked in and the passenger will be charged.

Checked baggage allowance

Depending on the type of WestJet ticket passengers bought, there may be an extra cost to add checked luggage allowance to the booking. Passengers can have allowances of up to 4 pieces of checked luggage. Each piece of checked luggage is subject to a maximum weight of 23 kg. Their combined width, height and length must also be less than 1578 cm. For an additional fee, oversized and overweight baggage will be carried by the airline, but only up to a maximum of 203 cm in combined width, height and length, and 45 kg in weight. Sports equipment may also be carried and fees will be charged for this depending on the equipment's dimensions and weight.
