About Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines was founded in 1945 and was previously known as Ethiopian Air Lines until 1965. It is Ethiopia's flag carrier and owned by the Ethiopian Government. Its headquarters are located in Addis Ababa, the country's capital. From its hub at the Bole International Airport, the airline has more than 70 Boeing, Bombardier and Airbus aircraft in its fleet.

Ethiopian Airlines has both domestic flights and international routes covering destinations in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. Among its more than 100 destinations, the airline's flights to Dubai, Johannesburg, Guangzhou, Nairobi and Beijing are some of the most popular. In 2011 it became a member of the Star Alliance. It is also a member of the African Airlines Association and of the International Air Transport Association. A significant number of carriers have codeshare agreements with the airline. These include Singapore Airlines, Asiana Airlines, All Nippon Airways and Lufthansa.

Online check-in

The airline's online check-in service is available starting from 36 hours ahead of departure for Ethiopian Airlines flights to international destinations and 24 hours prior to domestic flights, right up until 2 hours ahead of takeoff. Passengers can check in with their name and booking number. As well as being able to print their boarding card, passengers can also decide where they would like to be seated for the flight. Passengers cannot check in online if their flight is leaving from the United Kingdom, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad, Benin, Seychelles, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Mali, Gabon or Kenya. Airline check-in is available at all airports.

Hand luggage allowance

Passengers with an Economy class Ethiopian Airlines ticket can take 1 item of hand luggage on board that should weigh no more than 7 kg. Business class passengers may each take 2 items of hand luggage that are allowed to weigh up to 7 kg. The length, width and height of any item of hand luggage must not equal more than 23 x 40 x 55 cm. Passengers may also take a coat or blanket, a handbag, a book or magazine, baby food or a camera on all flights. Those travelling with young children can also bring a stroller on their flight.

Checked baggage allowance

Checked baggage allowances on an Ethiopian Airlines flight is governed by the route a passenger is flying on, however most destinations and departure airports allow passengers 1 or maybe 2 pieces of luggage and with maximum weight of 32 kg. Above this, the baggage cannot be transported in the plane. The airline will also carry mobility aids such as a crutches or wheelchairs. There are charges in place for anyone whose luggage is over their allowance. If an item of luggage weighs more than 32 kg, it will have to be transported as cargo, for which there will be an additional charge.

Hi There Ethiopian Airlines was a good experience, Flights were on time, stewardess were friendly and helpful and plane was very comfortable. I was unhappy to discover that when I had to book my lugage in from Jhb to Dbn I had to pay for an additional bag. I booked one ticket - paid one amount, Ethiopian Airlines allowed me two bags - surely this should mean my luggage would arrive in Durban without having to pay extra. What if one does not have the money to pay for luggage enroute. Please reply. Thank you
