Transaero Airlines

About Transaero Airlines

Transaero was a Russian air carrier with the IATA code UN that was shut down in 2015 after going bankrupt earlier in the same year. By the time of its bankruptcy, the airline's debt had reached into the billions. After operations ceased, Aeroflot agreed to transport passengers who had bought Transaero tickets until the end of 2015. Transaero itself was founded in 1990 and had its headquarters in Saint Petersburg. When it began operations in 1991, it became the first privately owned Russian airline to run scheduled services around the world. It also set up the first frequent flyer program out of all Russian airlines. The airline operated out of one main hub at Moscow Vnukovo Airport and another one at Saint Petersburg Airport. It also had smaller hubs in Yekaterinburg and Sochi. While in operation, its large fleet flew to more than 150 different destinations that were spread across the globe and included Beijing, Tel Aviv, New York and Miami. At the time of its bankruptcy, Transaero owned nearly 100 aircraft and had a fleet composed of primarily Boeing and Tupolev airplanes, plus a number of Airbus planes that were pending completion. The airline's final flight was a Russian domestic flight from Sokol Airport to Moscow Vnukovo.
