US Airways

INFORMATION UPDATE: US Airways has shut down their operations, and are no longer offering US Airways flights. The information below refers to the period US Airways was still operating.

Founded in 1937, US Airways commenced operations in 1939 and was one of the major airlines in America until 2015 when it merged with American Airlines. Its headquarters were previously located in Tempe, Arizona in the United States. The airline was also a Star Alliance member and Oneworld affiliate. The former company operated from its main hubs at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Previous codeshare agreements with British Airways, Qatar Airways, Air Berlin, Iberia and TAM Airlines have remained after the merger. Subsidiaries of the company were Piedmont Airlines and PSA Airlines. The airline operated flights totaled over 3,000 flights a day to almost 200 destinations over 24 countries. American Airlines flights continue to connect many locations in the United States to airports throughout the world in European destinations including London, Madrid, Paris and Frankfurt. Additional international cities include Mexico City, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Online check-in

Online check-in is available on all American Airlines flights, allowing passengers to book the seat they want. Online check-in can be done on a computer or even a smartphone or tablet, and is open 24 hours before the flight departure up until 45 minutes before the departure time. For international flights however, it is open until 90 minutes prior to departure. Check in can be completed in a couple of steps. Passengers must first enter their ticket number or confirmation code then select a date of departure. Once check in is complete, passengers can print off their boarding pass or get it sent directly to a smartphone.

Hand luggage allowance

Passengers travelling on American Airlines flights are allowed to take 1 piece of hand baggage as well as 1 personal item with them. Such items can include cameras, handbags and laptops. Hand baggage should not be bigger than 56 x 36 x 23 cm. These dimensions include the handle, wheels and other protrusions. The luggage should also be able to fit in the overhead locker. Musical instruments can be taken instead of a piece of baggage as long as its size and weight meet the hand luggage allowance. Liquids can also be taken on board but each container may not exceed 100 ml. All liquid containers should be sealed in a see-through plastic bag.

Checked baggage allowance

The amount of checked baggage a passenger is allowed to take with them depends on their flight route. Passengers flying domestically within North American or to a transatlantic or transpacific location can take up to 10 pieces of hold luggage with them. For those flying on all other routes, up to 5 pieces of luggage is allowed. The size of the hold baggage must not be heavier than 23 kg for all flights, except for those to Brazil, where up to 32 kg is allowed. The sum of all of the luggage dimensions must not be larger than 158 cm.
