About Air Asia
AirAsia was founded in 2001 and is Malaysia's largest airline plus Southeast Asia's biggest low-cost carrier. It is credited with pioneering low-cost flights in the region. It is based in Kuala Lumpur and operates out of its main flight hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The airline also has bases at Langkawi International Airport, Senai International Airport, Kuching International Airport, Penang International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport. It has a fleet of nearly 200 planes, all of which are manufactured by Airbus, spread out across these operating centres.
AirAsia has been around since 2001 and now serves nearly 70 different destinations right across Asia and Oceania. Some of its most popular routes include those to Chiang Mai and Phuket in Thailand, Guilin, Hangzhou and Hong Kong in China and Sydney in Australia. It also has various affiliated airlines serving many additional destinations. These airlines include AirAsia X, AirAsia Japan, AirAsia India, Indonesia AirAsia, Thai AirAsia and Philippines AirAsia.
Online check-in
Passengers can check in for AirAsia flights up to 14 days before departure. The latest they can check in online is 1 hour before the flight is due to leave. To do so, passengers should have their 6-digit reference number to hand. This facility is available for groups of up to 10 passengers. It is not available to pregnant passengers, those travelling with infants, or passengers younger than 16 who are travelling without an adult. If passengers need to drop off luggage, counters for this close 45 minutes ahead of domestic flights and 60 minutes ahead of international flights. Passengers can also check in at the airport for their AirAsia flight, although there is a fee for this on domestic flights.
Hand luggage allowance
The hand luggage allowance on an AirAsia flight is 1 item per passenger, in addition to 1 handbag or laptop bag. The maximum dimensions permitted for hand luggage are 35 x 23 x 56 cm. Hand luggage must not weigh more than 7 kg. If either of these limits are exceeded, passengers will be obliged to pay to have their luggage checked in at the gate. Containers of liquids, aerosols or gels kept in hand luggage must be smaller than 100 ml and must fit into a single 20 x 20 cm bag. This bag must be clear and resealable. Exceptions to this rule include medicines and baby food.
Checked baggage allowance
Checked baggage allowance must be booked in advance on AirAsia flights flights and is not included with a ticket. On domestic flights, passengers can pay to add between 15 kg and 40 kg of luggage allowance to their booking. On international flights, between 20 kg and 40 kg can be added. Individual pieces of checked luggage are limited to 81 x 119 x 119 cm in size and 32 kg in weight. Collapsible strollers for children and mobility aids (e.g. canes, crutches or wheelchairs) for those that need them are carried by the airline at no extra charge.
