Algarve

The treasure of Portugal
It is continental Europe’s southwesternmost corner. Its name comes from Arabic, it means the westernmost part of Al-Andalus, the Muslim kingdom in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. However, this very particular region is home to vestiges of every imaginable culture. From prehistoric peoples to Phoenicians to Romans, Jews and Visigoths, all left traces in this area. There are almost 5000 square kilometers of mountains, valleys and beaches: a natural, cultural and, of course, gastronomic treasure.

White sand paradise

300 days of sunshine a year

Infinite beaches

Miles and miles of white sand beaches. In the Algarve there are huge beaches and charming coves, but in the estuaries there are also islets and marshes where you can sunbathe without seeing a single person for hundreds of meters. In addition, many of the hotel facilities are only a few meters away from the sea. There are even golf courses next to the coast.

Traditional crafts

The best souvenirs are those that the locals make with their own hands: typical crafts are pottery and weave cane or palm leaves to create baskets or other utensils. the characteristic opuelo sapatos, which the peasants of this region have always worn, and especially wooden objects, such as kitchen tools or toys for the little ones.

Muslim waterwheels

The arrival of the Arabs brought many technical and agricultural advances to the Iberian Peninsula. Most of the tools in the field still have Arabic names. In the orchards, wooden wheels were used to extract fresh water. In Faro, some of them still work and are being used to irrigate the land.

Rich fishing

It is one of the visitor's favorite sports. Fishing is bountiful in the south of Portugal. Favorite species are snapper, bream, croaker, sea bream, conger eel, snook and even sea bream, but lobsters and barnacles can also be found among the rocks. In most fish grill restaurants everything has been caught from the sea a few hours before.

Navigable rivers

Trade marked the splendor of the Algarve in ancient times and most of it was carried out by river. The ships came to be loaded with metals from the mines of the region and also with other artisan products. Today you can navigate in boats that allow you to follow the same routes as centuries ago.

Variety of gastronomy

Sea, rivers, orchards and mountains. There are few regions more diverse than southern Portugal and that is reflected in its cuisine. Dishes with fresh fish of all kinds are very common, including tasty seafood. One of most famouse dish are Cataplana, you must tasty. Among the desserts, those made with honey are the most popular ones.

The land of wine

The first vineyards of the region were planted in ancient times. The 300 days of sunshine a year make the grapes have an extraordinary quality. The specialty is the variety of whites, which are the most common in typical pairings with rice and fish. Following a route through the most important wineries is a tasty cultural experience.

History and legacy

The towns of this region are related to great historical events. There are allusions to the Portuguese sailors who sailed the oceans and arrived in America in their fragile caravels, as well as castles and fortifications from old wars built as protection against pirates arriving from the north and south.

Since prehistory

In the south of Portugal there are archaeological remains dating back to the origins of man. You can find menhirs from prehistoric rites and Neolithic sites. All the great civilizations passed through this place, from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Visigoths and Muslims. In every building and every corner their footprint can be observed.

Unique architecture

In few places you can find mosque minarets alongside Christian churches, Renaissance palaces and Roman fortifications. In the Algarve there are not only examples from all of the history of art, but also popular details such as the whitewashed houses with blue doors or the unique decorative tiles.

Sports for all

The huge nature reserves of southern Portugal allow activities such as hiking or bird watching. On the beaches, however, surfing and sailing are the favorite activities of visitors. And if what you want is a quiet sport, there are a large number of golf courses that, due to their proximity to the sea, are truly original.

Perfect peaceful location

All types of tourism for all types of tourists
Generally, the Algarve is a calm and relaxed natural space, where people come to find peace. However, there is also the Monte Gordo Casino, which since 1934 has received visitors seeking both roulette and its fun shows. Just as one can sunbathe in the marshes of Olhao without seeing a single person around, there are also the nightclubs of Albufeira to enjoy crazy nights out. It is possible to practice all kinds of sea and mountain sports, and you can also visit archaeological remains and buildings of high cultural value.

  • It is a region that cannot be understood without the Guadiana river. In this area it is navigable and you can rent a boat to sail the river. On the shore we can find remains of Roman civilization, such as graves and groups of buildings, as well as Arab villas. The old castle of Alcoutim was a Muslim fortress built to control the navigation and the mineral trade that took place through the Guadiana. But perhaps the greatest historical treasure of this municipality is its route through its prehistoric heritage. There are menhirs, villages and remains of copper and iron mining operations. The Lavajo menhir is from the Neolithic era. It was built 5500 years ago. It is the largest in Portugal and one of the most important in the entire south of the Iberian Peninsula. You can still see its decorations with circular figures and other elements. The love for decoration is still present today in the traditional crafts of this land. Miniature figurines, colored blankets and bedspreads, and reed baskets from the Guadiana are very popular. When it comes to eating, the most typical dish is fried eel, the specialty is game dishes. Rabbits, hares, partridges and wild boars are the most precious meats.

  • In ancient times, for thousands of years, Castro Marim was a river port near the sea where ships that came to collect metals, especially copper, took refuge in the nearby mines of Alcoutim and Mértola. In the center of town you can see the fortified structure around the castle. The streets that surround it have the typical simplicity of the urban architecture of the Algarve area. Strolling through them is an experience: the white and bright blue colors and the floral decoration on the cornices are unique to this place. In addition to the beautiful beaches of Cabeço, Alagoa and Praia Verde that are hidden among pine forests, the salt flats are also a must visit. Authentic mountains of salt, pyramids that reflect the sunlight like mirrors. Without a doubt the souvenirs to take from here are the hand-made brooms or brushes that women traditionally make with the leaves of a local palm tree. The specialty is white wines, very aromatic and pleasant, and dry and sweet wines for aperitifs. They are worth trying while enjoying the fish from the port of Ferragudo.
