Kenya Airways is based in Nairobi and is Kenya's national flag carrier airline, and was formed after the breakup of its forerunner, East African Airways, in 1977. Initially owned by the Kenyan government, the airline became the first African flag carrier to be privatized in 1996, however, the Kenyan government still retains a large number of shares in the company.
